Posted just now • A rant
Okay so I was scrolling through r/teenagers last night — don't judge me, I like chaos — and I come across this post with the title "Rap has deteriorated..."
You know the vibe. Someone's about to drop a thinkpiece about how music used to mean something. Real instruments. Real lyrics. Not this mumble crap the kids are into. I rolled my eyes and clicked anyway because honestly, I was bored.
What I didn't realize was that I was walking directly into a trap. A masterfully laid, beautifully executed trap. And judging by the comments, so did about 6,000 other people.
The Setup Was Perfect
The post looks like one of those "then vs now" music comparisons. You've seen them. A deep Eminem bar on one side, some brainless repetitive hook on the other. The OP didn't even add commentary. Just... let it sit there.
And oh boy, did people take the bait.
"Rap is shitty now. Wow you pointed out something everyone already knew."
— Someone who definitely missed the joke
"I literally can't make out a word half these guys say, the other half is the word ho."
— Someone else who also missed the joke
Meanwhile the OP is in the comments just... watching. Occasionally replying with stuff like "this is bait bro" while people continue writing entire essays about the death of hip hop.
Then the Thread Descended Into Pure Madness
At some point, everyone who was in on the joke decided to turn the comments section into a museum of the most unhinged rap lyrics ever written. And reader, it is glorious.
One person just dropped the entirety of Kanye's "Lift Yourself" verse:
Scoop-diddy-whoop
Whoop-di-scoop-di-poop
Poop-di-scoopty"
When someone asked where it was from, the reply was simply: "The greatest lyrical Verse ever written 🙏"
And honestly? They weren't wrong.
Then came the flood. Someone spammed "JUMP OUT THE HOUSE" like 47 times. Another person contributed the poetic genius of "Doin your mom doin doin your mom," which sparked an immediate rebuttal: "No. Doin ya dad doin doin ya dad."
I can't make this stuff up. This actually happened. This is real internet history unfolding in real time.
The WAP Dissertation Nobody Asked For
One commenter decided to transcribe basically the entirety of WAP in the comments. Just... the whole thing. Card Declined at Reddit. And someone replied saying they "lose faith in humanity every time" they hear that song.
Like sir, you're in a thread where someone just typed "Poopy-di scoop" with complete sincerity. Pick your battles.
The Few Brave Souls Who Actually Got It
Some comments genuinely made me laugh out loud:
"Rap has always been about booty, need I direct your attention towards sir mixalot?"
"As soon as I saw this post I knew it was a r/playboicarti user, good shit man stay on that sigma grindset"
"Let's see how many fell for it" — top comment with 482 upvotes
Reply: "Apparently all of them"
And then there was the guy who said "music was better when michael jackson was molesting kids" which is such an unhinged thing to type that I had to put my phone down for a second.
So Has Rap Actually Deteriorated?
Look, I came into this thread ready to be annoyed. I left it cry-laughing at strangers on the internet typing "BitchBitchBitch" as a standalone comment.
The thread accidentally proved something interesting. For every person genuinely angry about modern rap, there were five people just... having fun. Not taking it seriously. Enjoying the absurdity. Because yeah, sometimes lyrics are dumb. Sometimes a guy says "poopy-di scoop" on a track and it becomes legendary. That's not deterioration — that's just music being weird and wonderful.
Also, the bait was genius. OP got 6.4K upvotes and nearly 600 comments of people either raging, laughing, or being very very confused. If that's not art, I don't know what is.
Your turn:
What's the dumbest rap lyric you secretly love? Be honest. I won't judge. (I will absolutely judge. The internet is forever. But drop it in the comments anyway.)
